The Point

The Bronx, NY
ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION

The Point Community Development Corporation is a nonprofit dedicated to youth development, cultural revitalization, and economic stability in the Hunts Point area of the South Bronx. The organization is further committed to empowerment of residents, community organizing, thoughtful policy advocacy, and activism.

Since 1994, The Point has been using a lens of environmental justice to organize the community around preserving open space and restoring the waterfront. By using advocacy and public information campaigns to disseminate pertinent information, residents have made their voices heard to develop public access to their waterfront.

The Point also advocates on behalf of the Hunts Point community in matters of planning and development. In a recent example, the New York State Department of Transportation is devising a plan to decommission the Sheridan Expressway, a 1.25-mile highway which is built parallel to the Bronx River. The plan is moving forward after years of advocacy by coalition of community groups who were concerned with waterfront access. The coalition, The Southern Bronx River Watershed Alliance, of which The Point is a member, represents community interests in urban planning and environmental justice.

The Point is a key community partner in the South Bronx Greenway project that seeks to implement bike and pedestrian routes that creates waterfront access for residents and opportunities for recreation.

This organization is also partnering with the New York City Environmental Justice Alliance to lead the South Bronx Community Resiliency Agenda that will ensure flood protection for Hunts Point. This plan intends to incorporate community input, monitor and oversee implementation, and introduce climate adaptation and mitigation measures.
