Fair Share Housing Center

New Jersey
ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION

Fair Share Housing Center is a nonprofit organization dedicated to fighting discriminatory or exclusionary zoning patterns which have deprived lower-income city residents the opportunity to live in safe, decent, and sanitary housing near employment and educational opportunities.

This mission is realized through the defense of the Mount Laurel Doctrine, which requires all 565 towns in the state to provide their fair share of affordable housing.

Efforts to Advance Water Equity

Fair Share Housing Center is a vocal advocate for people and communities affected by Hurricane Sandy. They were involved in the largest fair housing settlement in the history of the Fair Housing Act in redistributing federal disaster recovery funds. The settlement ensured aid to low-income renters and areas that were hardest hit by Hurricane Sandy. They are currently working on federal policy recommendations on housing and disaster recovery, aiming for a more proactive response to future natural disasters.
