With one-third of the nation’s water utility operators eligible to retire in the next decade, our sector finds itself at a critical crossroads. Not only is there additional pressure to hire and train the next generation of water workers, but with the current US water utility workforce being 85 percent male and 66 percent white, we also have an opportunity to rethink how we build this sector to positively transform communities across the nation.

We are pleased to share our Water Workforce and Leadership Library, which highlights accessible, forward-looking examples of water workforce apprenticeship, internship, and leadership development programs, as well as regional collaboratives, that can serve as replicable models for others trying to sustainably build their local or regional water workforce.
