A great deal of progress has been made towards the Clean Water Act’s original goal of fishable and swimmable waters, but much more work remains to be done over the next 50 years. Some of the major roadblocks are non-point source pollution continuing to be one of the largest origins of unregulated water pollution in our nation; the fight over the jurisdictional scope of the Clean Water Act and resulting cases making it to the Supreme Court; the impact of climate change on planning and regulatory compliance; and integrating racial equity and justice into water law and regulation.
