As general manager of the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission, I’m always looking for new ways to make visible what’s our largely invisible water and wastewater infrastructure.
This week the SFPUC released “You Can’t Live A Day Without Me”, a rap song about the City’s aging sewer system. The video was filmed and edited by San Francisco’s youth through BAYCAT, a local non-profit empowering underserved City youth through digital media training. The video was a truly home-grown effort—SFPUC staff wrote and performed in it. We even had special cameos by ex-49ers great Ronnie Lott and former San Francisco Mayor Willie L. Brown, Jr.
The video is also an example of how the SFPUC seeks to be a good community partner. This is one of many multi-media projects that BAYCAT and the SFPUC have partnered together on to bring professionally-produced community-based stories to augment the agency’s marketing and outreach strategies.
I am proud of how the SFPUC is using the power of lyrics and music to connect with young people. We want more youth to be engaged with our program. After all, they are the future stewards of our city’s exceptional water and wastewater systems.
